My practice explores stories embedded in our culture. The tales we tell that reveal so much about what it is to be human; what we are, and what we truly want. My aim is to make work that has iconic substance, where object and meaning unite. I am intrigued by feminine icons from the monstrous Medusa and Lizzie Borden to Caitlyn Jenner and Barbie. I use the narratives and iconography of these notorious females to reflect women's place in the modern world.
Recently, new trans-gender imagery shows a drag-king bride distancing herself from her femininity while the drag-queen seeks to embody his. Women are portrayed in intentionally schematic style. Subjects sit rigidly, within spaces of paint or polished metal leaf reminiscent of early icon paintings.
