I am interested in female icons in contemporary culture, fairy tale and myth; from Eve and Pandora to Drag Kings and Barbie Brides. With a curated perfection of the body's image being a modern social expectation, fear of seeming monstrous is omnipresent. I feel that femininity in both men and women that does not conform to the narrowest of prescribed frameworks, is still socially unacceptable and at times, actively punished. I believe that women and girls in particular (although not exclusively) engage in self-erasure because, centuries since The Fall, they still buy into the notion that they are objects of shame. So I delve back into the stories of notorious women in our culture seeking to re-imagine their narratives.
